10 Felt
BILLIARD CLOTH, or FELTThe finest textile fabric made and is a woollen cloth of the beaver type. The wool is very carefully selected and then spun with great care. Expert weavers operate the looms which weave into cloths the thousands of very fine threads. The cloth is then milled so thoroughly that it is waterproof and capable of resisting the dampest atmosphere. The dye used is such that light has little effect upon it. The best merino wool is used, and when ready for use the cloth has a perfect level face, soft and smooth. Plain weave is used for the best grades and 3-shaft twill for others. Widths from 72-in. to 81-in. Cloth shrinks about 331/3 per cent from reed width to the finished width. An all-cotton billiard cloth is now being made and is meeting with much support. ———————— A wool fabric united without weaving. It is actually a sheet of wool fibre, matted into a substantial texture by the application of heat, moisture and pressure. There are many woven fabrics that are felted so heavily that it is difficult to decide whether they are woven or not, as the threads are so closely interlocked that they cannot be separated, and this fabric is stronger than a carded felt of same weight. The shrinkage of a woven felt fabric may be up to 50 per cent in both width and length. The peculiar property of felt is believed to have been known in early times, and the process of felting was used for the tents of the Tartar, as well as for articles of their clothing. It is difficult to say when felted wool was first used for hats. Hats of felt were worn in England in the Middle Ages. -

14 Blanket Shawls Or Rugs
Fabrics made of two-fold cotton warp and woollen weft in length from 60-in. X 64-in. to 68-in. X 76-in. for the natives of West and East Africa and some South American markets. They are woven from simple twill and sateen weaves and made reversible. The designs are mostly conventional and developed in coloured wefts. There will be a dark figure on a light ground on one side, and this will be reversed on the other. All qualities are shipped in both fine and coarse wools. During finishing the fabric shrinks from 10 to 30 per cent. in width, according to the type of wool weft used, and are raised to give a pile surface.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Blanket Shawls Or Rugs

15 Crepon
A crepe-like structure obtained in several ways, such as (1) a combination of material; (2) combination of weaves; (3) combination of material and weaves; (4) by special chemical processes. Crepons are true crepes because the fabric when finished is crinkled. The terms " crepe " and " crepon " are now used for any fabric of the crepe style, produced by any of the four methods given above. The crepes made for shipping to India, China, South America and other markets in cotton are produced by methods (2) in dobby looms and from 6 to 16 shafts used. Standard makes are as follows: - 34-in. 120 yards, 58 X 62, 34's T., 16's W., 291/2-lb., 12 shafts; 35-in. 120 yard, 68 X 68, 36's T., 22's W., 28-lb., 8 shafts; 56-in. 120 yard, 72 X 76, 36's T., 24's W., 46-lb. 8 shafts. Wool crepons are made with mohair for the face warp and weft and botany for the back warp and weft. As botany shrinks more than mohair the crepe effect is obtained when the cloth is finished -
16 Crimp Fabrics
The term includes such types as the "blister" and the "crepon." These fabrics are used for the making of dress goods, and can be produced in five different ways, namely: (a) by making suitable combinations of slack and tight weaves; (b) unequal warp tension in weaving, the crimp forming warp threads being allowed to weave very slack; (c) by combining two materials having a marked dissimilarity of shrinkage power during wet finishing, i.e., botany wool and mohair; (d) by modifying the weave structure in such a manner as to drop some picks from the main fabric and allow them to float on the back, the effectiveness of this method is enhanced by using a hard-twisted, single weft yarn to assist the contraction; (e) chemical means, such as is produced by printing the cloth in stripes with caustic soda of about 20 per cent strength, thickened with some substance such as starch. The cloth shrinks where printed and the unprinted parts in puckering gives the crimp effect. By dyeing the cloth two tones are obtained as a darker shade is shown where the caustic soda appears (see crepeing and crimps) -
17 Curl Effects
These are imitation weft pile fabrics and are obtained by the use of a shrinking with a non-shrinking weft, such as woollen and mohair yarns. The picking may be one of each or two of each alternately. The wool weft weave plain and the mohair is floated as required. The cloth is milled and shrinks in width, but as the mohair does not shrink the floats are caused to loop on the surface. The warp is generally of cotton yarn. -
18 Pile
The yarn which forms the face of fabrics such as velvets, velveteens, terry, etc. There are several varieties, viz., warp pile, weft pile, and knotted pile, and cut, loop or curl pile. Warp Pile is formed by an extra warp additional to and much longer than the ground warp. The pile threads are woven over wires which, when removed, leave loops either uncut or cut. This system is used for wool and silk velvets and many carpets, rugs, etc. Terry fabrics have looped pile formed by weaving without wires. Weft Pile is formed by weft floats which are cut after the cloth is woven to make the pile as seen in velveteens, corduroys, etc. Knotted Pile is made by hand by knotting short lengths of yarn to the warp threads. Design is formed by using pile threads of different colours. After the rug or carpet is woven the pile is trimmed to a uniform length. Curl Pile is produced by weaving two kinds of yarn in the same cloth, a non-shrinking yarn being floated loosely on the surface while a yarn that shrinks readily is interwoven closely. When the cloth is shrunk the unshrinking yarn forms curls on the surface, as in astrakhans. -
19 Tucking
Felting process by which Irish frieze is prepared. The fabric is treated to a prolonged washing or sousing in a carefully prepared solution, slowly heated up to boiling point, and then as slowly cooled again. This process shrinks and thickens the cloth to such an extent that it is almost impossible to separate one thread from another.
